"The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life that comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun." Christopher McCandless
Keith was born at Hill Air Force
Base Utah, the first child of an active duty munitions officer. Although he has no memories of Utah, being the son of an Air Force officer combined with an adult life of
constant relocation and travel Keith would develop an inquisitive personality. A personality with a never ending interest
in new experiences and learning evermore about global cultures.
Beginning with his earliest memories of living abroad, his first summer job at age eleven and cruising Main Street on Friday night, Keith has experienced events in life that make him smile to this day. A life of constant
travel and relocation have created numerous memories for an individual lucky enough to
see the world. A few of these experiences include:
- His first Jeepney ride in downtown Manila
- Visiting the stunning beaches west of Baguio
- Street food anywhere in Asia
- Brats and pommes frites without a bun?
- Living in the three largest cities in North America
- Taking that "Road Trip" covering every mile of Route 66
- The wonderful variety of food from the numerous global cultures
- Experiencing an earthquake and a typhoon
- Living in a tropical environment, a tundra climate and the deserts of Arizona
At 18 Keith joined the United States Air
Force and was stationed at Williams AFB in Chandler Arizona. Although this was
his permanent duty station, Keith actively pursued several temporary duty assignments of 90 days each to military installations abroad. On
one of these assignments to Clark Air Base Keith learned how to make lumpia,
which to this day is one of his favorite foods. Over a six year enlistment
Keith earned several medals, numerous awards and received an Honorable Discharge in
1989.
After leaving the Air Force Keith
attended the University of Minnesota and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in
International Relations and a Master’s of Science Degree in Environmental Health & Safety.
Keith completed both of these programs in 4.5 years while working two part-time
jobs.
Over the next 20 years Keith would move eight times,
travel over 2 million miles on United Airlines and sleep in hotels, on average,
150 nights per year. In addition
Keith sailed the British Virgin Islands, took up kayaking & hiking, had some of his
photographs published, worked on constantly improving his cooking skills, created a one-of-a-kind safety engagement assessment and
learned that living out of a suitcase is actually very convenient.
